Florida Jr. Blades have grown into one of the most respected junior hockey organizations in the southeastern United States, providing a pathway for players to advance to college hockey and higher levels of junior and professional competition.
Origins (2000–2010)
The Florida Jr. Blades organization was established in 2000 in Estero, Florida, alongside the rapid growth of hockey in Southwest Florida that followed the arrival of the Florida Everblades in 1998. The organization was created to provide elite youth development opportunities and a local pathway for talented players to continue competing without leaving the state.
Operating from Hertz Arena, the Jr. Blades quickly became one of Florida’s premier junior hockey clubs, developing players from the mite level through junior hockey.
Entry into Junior Hockey
The organization expanded into junior hockey by launching a Tier III junior team that began play in the Empire Junior Hockey League (EmJHL) during the 2011 season. When the Empire league merged into the United States Premier Hockey League in 2013, the Florida Jr. Blades became one of the league’s founding members. The team later competed in the USPHL Premier Division, while the developmental division became known as the USP3HL before eventually being absorbed back into the Premier structure.
Building a Development Model
Over the past decade, the Florida Jr. Blades have established themselves as a player-development organization rather than simply a competitive junior team. Their philosophy has centered on:
- Developing NCAA and American Collegiate Hockey Association players.
- Helping athletes advance to higher junior leagues.
- Providing year-round training through the youth and junior programs.
- Creating continuity between junior hockey and junior hockey within one organization.
Hundreds of players have moved on to collegiate hockey after spending time in the Jr. Blades system, with alumni advancing throughout NCAA Division I, Division III, ACHA, and professional hockey.
Growth of the Organization
Today, the Florida Jr. Blades operate one of the largest hockey development programs in the Southeast, featuring:
- Elite youth travel teams
- Girls hockey programs
- Learn-to-play and recreational hockey
- Junior hockey competing in the USPHL
The organization continues to call Hertz Arena home, giving players daily access to one of the premier hockey facilities in Florida.
A New Era: NCDC (2026)
In 2026, the Florida Jr. Blades announced their expansion into the National Collegiate Development Conference, the tuition-free Tier II league within the USPHL. This marked one of the most significant milestones in club history, providing players with a direct pathway to NCAA hockey while elevating the organization’s profile nationally. The addition of an NCDC team complements the existing Premier program and further strengthens the development ladder available within the Jr. Blades organization.
Legacy
Over more than 25 years, the Florida Jr. Blades have become known for:
- Being one of Florida’s longest-running elite hockey organizations.
- Developing players from junior hockey through junior hockey.
- Producing numerous NCAA and professional alumni.
- Helping establish Southwest Florida as one of the strongest hockey markets in the southeastern United States.
